Section 1: The Cold War Begins The wartime alliance between the U.S. and Soviet Union crumbles as Stalin expands communism in Eastern Europe. Truman focuses on containment with aid programs including the Marshall Plan. The airlift saves West Berlin, but tensions mount as new alliances form. Chapter Summary Section 2: The Korean War Mao Zedong and the communists gain power in China. North Korea attacks South Korea, setting up a clash between communist and noncommunist powers. Heavy fighting ends in a stalemate. The U.S. increases military spending and global commitments. Chapter 25: The Cold War 1945–1960

Section 3: The Cold War Expands The Soviets develop the atomic bomb and the arms race begins. Eisenhower stockpiles nuclear weapons, but they are useless during the Hungarian uprising.
