GROW Coaching Model Goal Reality Options Way forward

GOALS Agree a topic/objective/issue for discussion Should be: S pecific M easurable A greed R ealistic T imed Useful Goal questions: What do you want to achieve? What will it look like/what will happen when you have achieved your objective?

REALITY What’s happening now? A current issue Causes Development needs to address/improve the situation Useful Reality questions: What happens at the moment?/current position/what is the issue? What have you done so far? What are your strengths/development needs? What are the barriers/what is stopping you from…?

OPTIONS What should I do? Finding as many alternative courses of action as possible. Useful Options questions: What could you do? How could you achieve what you want to? What might happen if you…? What would be the impact of your action?

WAY FORWARD What have you decided to do next? By the end of the coaching session, have clear actions, understand what those actions will look like, anticipate the consequences of the actions and have a time frame for action. Useful Way forward questions: What will you do? When? What support will you need?

Practice Session 1 Identify one of the following: Something that you are working on/want to improve A relationship you want to improve A skill you want to develop A goal you have In pairs, one as the coach, the other as coachee, practise coaching based on your chosen issue, using the GROW model to structure your session. 10 minutes, then swap.

Reflection Complete the coaching skills’ inventory. Compare your views of yourself as a coach with the views of the person you coached. What are you areas for development?
