Conduction 03 June 2016 Objectives Be able to describe how heat is transferred You will be able to define conduction and describe it in terms of the particles inside materials. HSW: AF3: Select appropriate methods for presenting scientific data. Used before in: Will use again in: Lesson 2 – Energy Transformations PLTS: Independent enquirers: support conclusions, using reasoned arguments and evidence. Used before in:Will use again in: Keywords Solid, liquid, gas, particles, conduction, convection, thermal, heat transfer, insulator.

Outcomes All students should be able to: Define conduction and describe what is happening in terms of particles Most students should be able to: Describe an experiment that demonstrates conduction and give examples of good conductors and insulators. Some students should be able to: Explain how free electrons affect conduction.

Transfer of heat Conduction is the transfer of energy between particles Convection is the change of density of a fluid causing it to flow Radiation is the transfer of energy by waves – infra-red needs no medium to transfer energy. (The sun’s heat gets here through space!)

Conduction 1) What makes a good conductor? 2) What makes a good insulator?

Conduction Draw this diagram. 1)What happens to the particles in this metal rod as it gets warmer? 2) Show how the heat is transferred from one end of the rod to the other on the diagram. 3) What happens to the free electrons? 4) Do the particles travel down the rod? Heat Transferred

Summary of Conduction Fill in the gaps using the following words and then stick the summary into your books (YOU MAY HAVE TO USE WORDS MORE THAN ONCE) THERMAL GOOD ELECTRONS HEATVIBRATIONS TRANSFERRED CONDUCTING
