It’s all about a New Life Romans 6:1-23

Romans five Paul has shown to the readers that through salvation Christians have: Peace with God,Christian Hope with God, God’s Love and Eternal Life.

Growing up at home I had to and so did you, we had to live by our parent’s rule. But when we grew up and move out, we then made our on rules. We had a new Identity, we were no longer under the rule of old school. We are to become Dead.

Paul knew that some Christians failed to fully grasp the New Life. How are we set free?

The subject of this chapter is the ability of God to make sinners, whom He has declared righteous, actually righteous. He shows that the justified sinner cannot continue in sin because he died and rose again in Christ.

Paul had stated in 5:20 that where sin abound grace much more abound. But the thought was by the new Christians why not just keep sinning and God will supply more Grace. Such a question was ridiculous.

The very fact that Paul is asking this question makes it obvious that he understood justification to mean a declaration of righteousness; that it did not mean to make a person good, but to declare a person good. Justification means that the guilt or the penalty of sin is removed, not the power of sin in this life. McGee, J. V.

He is dead to sin (vv. 2–4). Paul’s illustration is baptism. The Greek word has two basic meanings: (1) a literal meaning—to dip or immerse; and (2) a figurative meaning—to be identified with.

Water baptism has no magical power to forgive sin. The Water is a symbol of an inner work of forgiveness by the spirit, the washing by the word of God.

Paul could have been thinking of both literal and figurative in his discussion of baptism. Which ever, Paul makes it clear it is all by Christ.

Historians agree that the mode of baptism in the early church was immersion. The believer was “buried” in the water and brought up again as a picture of death, burial, and resurrection. V 4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.

Thankfully it does not end with the death and burial but the resurrection is where believer are to live today. A true transformation by the Glory of God enable us to live a new way of Life.
