Why Not Sin? Romans 6:1-2 Grace Community Church October 28, 2007

2 Two Questions How do you know you are right with God? (Romans 1-4)
How do you know you will be right with God tomorrow, in 10 years, or 10,000 years from now? (Romans 5)

3 Romans 5:19-21 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous. 20 The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

4 Romans 6:1-2 1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?

5 Romans 6:1-11 6     What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

6 ‘When I have understood chapter 6.’
“One Sunday evening at the close of a service at Westminster Chapel, somewhere about 1943, a certain well known preacher came into my vestry and said to me: ‘When are you going to preach a series of expository sermons on the Epistle to the Romans?’ I answered immediately: ‘When I have understood chapter 6.’ -Martin Lloyd Jones

7 What does “Died to sin” mean?
Dead to sin’s influence? No longer ‘ought’ to sin? Slowly moving away from sin? We have renounced sin? No longer guilty ?

8 Romans 5:21 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Having died to sin means we are dead to the guilt, condemnation, rule, and reign of sin.

9 Romans 6:1-2 1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?
