The Great Gatsby Chapter 8

After the accident “Nothing happened,” he said wanly. “I waited, and about four o-clock she came to the window and stood there for a minute and then turned out the light” What was Gatsby expecting to happen? “Go away now, old sport?” Why does Nick suggest that Gatsby should leave? “He couldn’t possibly leave Daisy until he knew what she was going to do. He was clutching at some last hope and I couldn’t bear to shake him free” What is your opinion of Nick here?

Gatsby tells the story of his past with Daisy… Gatsby found Daisy, her wealth and social standing, and the fact that she had been loved by many men to be “excitingly desirable” and full of “mystery” Do you think Gatsby really loves Daisy? Give evidence. He misled Daisy into believing that he was rich and could take care of her. “He had intended, probably, to take what he could and go—but he found that he had committed himself to the following of a grail” Grail=sacred object said to possess miraculous powers

Daisy’s voice (from Gatsby and Daisy’s past) “She had caught a cold, and it made her voice huskier and more charming than ever, and Gatsby was overwhelmingly aware of the youth and mystery that wealth imprisons and preserves, of the freshness of many clothes, and of Daisy, gleaming like silver, safe and proud above the hot struggles of the poor”

Gatsby tells the story of his past with Daisy… Gatsby goes off to war Daisy is getting tired of waiting “She wanted her life shaped now, immediately – and the decision must be made by some force- of love, of money, or unquestionable practicality – that was close at hand” Who or what is the “force” that shaped Daisy’s life?

Gatsby tells the story of his past with Daisy… “I don’t think she ever loved him” What excuse does Gatsby make about Daisy’s actions/words from the previous afternoon? Even five years later and even after Daisy admitted that she loved Tom, Gatsby is still holding on to hope…

Foreshadowing What is the weather like on the morning after the accident? “Don’t do it to-day…I’ve never used that pool all summer” Nick needs to catch the train into the city “I didn’t want to leave Gatsby” “…I disapproved of him from beginning to end” Nick admits that he disapproved of Gatsby--why does he still care?

Nick flashes back to tell us what happened at the garage after they left Wilson is a wreck Talks about the yellow car Recalls when Myrtle’s face was bruised up Found the dog leash Michaelis tries to help Wilson believes the man she was having an affair with killed her Wilson references the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleberg-God What specifically did he say/do to Myrtle in reference to the eyes?

Tragic ending Michaelis leaves George in the morning and goes back to check on him four hours later, and George is gone “holocaust was complete”
