Suhyeon Yoo Kijeong Shin Heeyoon Choi Collecting Foreign Digital Grey Literature through Consortium in Korea December 8-9, th International Conference on Grey Literature

2 Value of Grey Literature  Grey literature…  Is the first and sole source for specific research topic  May contain comprehensive, concrete, and up-to-date information on research findings  Research on the scientific quality of grey literature  Grey literatures have higher usage rates than books  Over 90% of the Korean researchers were demanding the full text of the foreign grey literature  Dependence of Korean researchers on foreign grey literature  Reference analysis of Korean major journals (SCI-listed)  Citing rate of the foreign grey literature is about 24% of the total references

3 Difficulties of Collecting Grey Literature  Acquisition difficulties  Librarians’ time and effort are required to identify and locate foreign grey literature  A high level of subject knowledge, professional skill, and personal dedication have to be devoted to the task.  Major difficulties related GL for the Korean librarians Despite the importance of GL, it is often neglected to be dealt with one of major resources in Korean libraries

10 Issues of Collecting GL through KESLI  Advantages  Makes researchers get the information as soon as it publishes  Reduces librarians’ time and effort of identifying, collecting, and cataloging  Solves the language problem from contract to the service  Disadvantages  Cannot tailor or customize each library’s need  Cannot negotiate the subscription terms including price  Cannot archive perpetually  Has to subscribe every year
