Body Organization Section 1-1

Cells, Tissues, Organs A group of cells working together is called a tissue There are four major types of tissue: Muscle tissue Nervous tissue Connective tissue Epithelial tissue

Epithelial tissue Covers and protects underlying tissue Epithelial tissue can be found on the outside of our skin and on the outside of our organs

Nervous tissue Sends electrical signals throughout our body It makes up our brain, nerves, and sense organs

Muscle tissue Made of cells that contract and relax to produce movement

Connective tissue Joins, supports, protects, nourishes, and cushions organs There are many different kinds such as ligaments and even blood

How the body is organized Tissues Organs Organ systems

Homeostasis The maintenance of a stable internal environment The body is able to maintain fairly constant body temperature, blood sugar, water level, etc. Our body is able to do this because of specialized cells, tissues, and organs

Body Systems Chart Use your book, pages 6-7, and your muscle partner to fill in the organ systems chart. Remember that organs are groups of tissues that work together…therefore… a bone is an organ too!
