Outline What are altmetrics? Altmetrics for articles Altmetrics for other things What do the numbers mean?

altmetrics = “alternative metrics” What are altmetrics?

Altmetrics let us measure and monitor the reach and impact of scholarship and research through online interactions. Altmetrics work by measuring online interactions.

Altmetrics work for peer-reviewed literature Altmetrics for articles

Altmetrics for Articles As a service offered by a publisher As a result of self-archiving your work Digital Iowa State Univ. Personal website Research Gate / Academia.edu / Figshare

Altmetrics for Articles Publishers – PLOS

Altmetrics for Articles Publishers – Altmetric on Science

Altmetrics for Articles Self-Archiving – and Altmetric

Altmetrics for other things

Can be gathered for anything that’s shared online. Are part of the larger picture of how your work is being used, accessed, and shared.

Altmetrics for other things What you want: Usage/sharing information. Open Access– no barriers to users. Facilitates easy usage and sharing. Connects to different accounts and platforms. Easier to locate and track Ex: Twitter is a source of a lot of altmetrics data

Presentations Slideshare Transcript of slide text (should improve search results) Tracks views & sharing activity Easy sharing with social media

Audio (like podcasts) Soundcloud Comments Multiple ways to listen (stream/download, desktop/app) Tracks # of plays, subscribers, and more Easy sharing with social media

Writing (blogs, websites, etc.) Wordpress Provides LOTS of metrics and usage data. Can help you change habits to be more effective

Data* Figshare Assigns a DOI Provides a citation Tracks usage information. *Also works for articles, posters, presentations, etc.

What do the numbers mean ?

New Territory Not comparable with citations. Not fool-proof. Value is contextual and changing.

Altmetrics provide context Altmetrics intersect research and social media, adding meaning to both. They are FAST Provide new information Can be used for a variety of purposes Community engagement, promotion, etc.

One last example… THIS information is meaningful.

Putting things together… Notes: Link not given at original presentation; mentioned in Mozilla Science blog w/ link to Slideshare; Figshare gets highest “views” for Open Access topic material
