CARBOHYDRATES Make glucose (sugar) - fuel that gives energy Found in grain, fruit, vegetable, etc… Two types: Simple carbohydrates Sugars found naturally in foods Sugars added during food processing Complex carbohydrates Two types: Starch Dietary fibre

FATS Important source of energy Vital for healthy skin and hair Found in animal tissue, oils and in some plants 4 types Monounsaturated fats help reducing risk of developing heart disease Polyunsaturated fats Saturated fats increases risk of heart disease and stroke Trans fats increase LDL (bad) cholesterol

PROTEIN Made up of building blocks called amino acids Amino acids - help in physical and chemical processes in bodies Builds up, maintains, and replaces tissues Provide support in our ability to see Found in meat, dairy products, nuts, eggs, etc… 5 types: Whey Protein Soy Protein Milk Protein (Casein) Egg Protein Rice Protein

FIBRE All parts of plant foods that our body can't digest or absorb Improves bowel (a part of the intestine) function Reduces bowel transit time Reduces risk of Colon Cancer (cancer that starts in the large intestine) Helps to prevent Diabetes Found in nuts, vegetables, fruits, grain, etc.. 2 types: Soluble fibre can be dissolved in water Insoluble fibre does not diges t

VITAMINS Organic food substances found only in living things Essential to the normal functioning of our bodies Vitamin deficiency may increase risk of health problems: poor bone health (osteoporosis) heart disease cancer Found in diary products, citrus fruit, vegetables, etc… 2 typesFat-soluble dissolve in fat and can be stored in bodyWater-soluble dissolve in water

MINERALS (DIETARY) Help in growing, developing, and staying healthy Found in dairy products, red meat, vegetables, etc… 2 types: Trace minerals Trace ( meaning small amount) minerals chromium, copper, iodine, iron, selenium, etc… Macro minerals Macro (meaning larger amounts of) minerals calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, etc…

WATER Necessary for: digestion the transport of nutrients the excretory (elimination) of body wastes circulation absorption the regulation of body temperature Two-thirds(55%-75%) of the human body Calories is 0
