Daily Routine ) Come into class and quietly sit in your seat. 2) Write your homework in your Agenda. 3) Take out your Social Studies notebook. QOTD – What is a Social Contract? QOTD – What is a Social Contract? Break it apart – What does social mean? What is a contract? Try to put them together. Ans - An agreement between 2 or more groups of people to organize the public and maintain order. Learning Goal-Evaluate components of a “social contract” in America

Please create a Combination Notemaking Outline. Notes Notes Picture of Notes Social Contract is = Summary

What does that mean? - It is the relationship between the Rights that you have & What you are Responsible for doing. Our nation was based on this social contract between the people and the government.

How does it work? The contract works in two ways. The government (through our elected representatives and public employees) provides important services and protects our civil rights. The government (through our elected representatives and public employees) provides important services and protects our civil rights. The people, in return, must agree to the responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society. The people, in return, must agree to the responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society

What does this look like? Draw your picture of a Social Contract. Government provides: People provide:

Agreeing to the social contract DOES NOT mean that you approve of everything about our government. It means that you accept the fundamental agreement = Rights of the People + Laws of the Government + Responsibilities of being a Citizen. ***Important Notice***

Problems with this Contract. Is there a problem with people demanding their rights but not fulfilling their responsibilities? What do you do when the government does not fulfill it’s promise?

How do you “sign” the Social Contract we talked about? Next Important Question – By saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Pledge of Allegiance Go Ahead and write out the Pledge of Allegiance.

-We say the Pledge of Allegiance to “sign” the social contract every morning before school. -It is supposed to get you to think about the Rights that you have as a citizen AND the things that you need to do as a citizen. But many people don’t know what they are promising. Your job now is to rewrite the Pledge of Allegiance into a Promise of Loyalty that people will be able to understand.
