2 Activity O In your groups read your assigned scenario. O Complete the Pro and Con list with your group members. O Be ready to share your ideas with the class. O What similarities can we draw??

3 How does a government protect us? O With a partner come up with at least four examples in your notebooks. O Be ready to share. How should the government or society respond to acts of violence?

4 Think about… O What might people who are stronger or smarter than others do? O What are some things that people could do to protect their lives, liberty, or property?

8 State of Nature o John Locke, an English philosopher, influenced the thinking of the founding fathers. o According to Locke this is when NO government or laws exist. o Your scenarios last class were examples of this!!

9 Locke’s Natural Rights 1.) Life: People want to survive and feel safe 2.) Liberty: People want to be free and make their own decisions 3.) Property: People want to own things that are necessary to survive (homes, land) O All people have these rights because they are human beings!!

10 Social Contract Agreement between government and people. O This is what you are giving up to be protected by your government!!! In a state of nature, no one has the right to govern you, no one’s life, liberty or property would be protected. Therefore, the people must give their consent.

11 Influences of a Republic O System of government where people elect representatives O Representatives manage government for people – common good

12 Common Good O Citizens have the power to rule/govern O Citizens delegate or entrust their power by electing leaders to serve their interests. O Work cooperatively to promote common good rather than their self-interests.

13 Adapting a Republican Gov’t US as a Democracy O People choose leaders who make laws O Representatives run government for common good How are we a Representative Democracy?
