Máša- the Veiled Chameleon The guide for a breeder created by Markéta Oswaldová ©

What is “chameleon”? -any of numerous lizards of the family Chamaeleontidae, characterized by the ability to change the color of their skin, very slow locomotion, and a projectile tongue.

Scientific classification  kingdom: ANIMALIA  phylum: CHORDATA  class: REPTILIA  order: SQUAMATA  suborder: IGUANIA  family: CHAMELEONIDAE  genus: CHAMAELEO  species: CHAMELEO CALYPTRATUS

The origin of the Veiled Chameleon  Known from the Miocene epoch  Came from dry parts of Africa, Middle East, southern Europe, Madagascar  Their habitat: desert, semi- desert, savannah, rain-forest  Some kinds lives in trees

What does the Veiled Chameleon look like? Veiled Chameleons are sexually dimorphic- are easily distinguishable( because of the heel at the feet) Female Male

A male Veiled Chameleon  Larger than the female  A prehensile tail  A spur at the heel of the feet  usually varying shades of green, with 3-5 yellow/orange vertical bands on its back, and sides  Can be coloured (blue, green, red, yellow…)  large crest on top of its head (also coloured)

A female Veiled Chameleon  Less colourful  A small crest  A prehensile tail  No spur at the heel of the feet

Breeding of the Veiled Chameleon „The Veiled or Yemen Chameleon is one the more hardy chameleons and is a great starter Chameleon, however it still requires specialist care and is by no means a reptile for beginners.“
