Joan Miro “My father was very realistic … if I said the sky was purple, he made fun of me, which threw me into a rage.”

About Miro … This Spanish artist painted a world of wondrous creatures that seem to dance before our eyes. He got his ideas for his pictures by remembering his family’s farm. He was inspired by plants, animals, and insects he saw there. Rather than paint them exactly as they look, Miro invented all kinds of colorful creatures. Miro loved to paint flowing curvy shapes.

Joan Miro paintings

Let’s analyze … Can you find a creature that seems to be made from a guitar and has a circle for a head? out of a box Find a creature that is coming out of a box. It has two colored wings, one yellow and one blue. It has black antennae and two tiny black arms.

Let’s analyze … striped bodiescurvy armsLook for two creatures in the front of the picture. They have striped bodies and curvy arms. What do you think they are doing? ladderNotice the ladder. What do you see as you climb to the top of it?

Make up a title … What are all these crazy creatures doing?

Let’s make our own Miro paintings Follow these directions …

Directions: Step 1: Use a white sheet of paper and crayons. Draw plants, animals, and insects in a Miro-like garden. Press firmly on your crayon when drawing. (You will see why soon!) When you think you are done with this part, go to step 2 … Step 2: Use the watercolor paint and paint gently over your crayon drawings. Follow all of Mr. DeSobe’s “How to Paint” rules!!! Let it dry and glue it to a colorful sheet of construction paper.
