Advanced Practice Succession Planning Development Pathway Maggie Grundy Janet Corcoran

Background NMC (2005) Modernising Nursing Careers (2006) Priority actions: Develop a competent and flexible nursing workforce Update career pathways and career choices Prepare nurses to lead in a changed healthcare system Modernise the image of nursing and nursing careers Advanced practice development inconsistent – little national guidance about what is required at this level. Scotland lead for Advanced/Specialist Practice NMC - Need for systematic means of developing advanced practitioner attributes play central role in building workforce capacity to aid direction of travel set out in MNC 2006

Advanced Practice A level of Practice, rather than a role or title Applicable across practice contexts Applicable across professional contexts ‘Specialist’ practice is not above or below ‘Advanced’ practice – it is on a different continuum.

Succession Planning Building talent through flexible options to develop individuals (Cunningham 2007). Not “Job Titles” but key skills and behaviours required to enable organisations to achieve its goals and strategies (Guinn 2000). A national approach towards key skills and behaviours through education provision is necessary at advanced practitioner level given the extensive and rapid change highlighted in BHBC (SGHD 2007). Succession planning pathway therefore devised with intention of providing a generic, flexible and sustainable framework, supporting educational solutions for advanced practice. Anticipated that it will enhance capability and capacity within nursing profession using consistent approach nationally within Scotland.
