Chain of Command Dilemmas Fred... Nancy...Jim Food servers at a restaurant Jim calls in sick which means Fred and Nancy will have to take over his station. Fred and Nancy do not mind because it means more tips for them. Janice, the manager, still writes Jim up and later on Jim gets fired for missing too much work even though his co-workers don ’ t complain. Dave was on his way to work when his car stalled at a stop light. He was able to push his car into an office parking lot. On the building a sign stated that all unauthorized vehicles will be towed. It was an important day at work for Dave because he was being interviewed for a supervisory position. This promotion would be a significant raise with benefits.

Things to Remember Understanding the Chain of Command can assist us in our career development. The only response to orders that gets us ahead is the assertive response. We all make mistakes so the important difference is how we handle our mistakes.
