What is Safeguarding? Child protection looks at recognising abuse and neglect and acting on it... Safeguarding looks at keeping vulnerable adults safe from a wider range of potential harm, and delivers preventative action, not just reaction.

Key Messages to Staff Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility Need to be familiar with terms and issues Learners safety and feelings take priority Follow policy and procedures to the letter Don’t delay in reporting Don’t investigate Take objective notes at the time

Look for signs of abuse Low self esteem or confidence, phobias, Changes in personality, performance or behaviour Distrust, Anxiety, Secrecy, Self-harm, Panic attacks, Inappropriate behaviour

Dispel Myths Anyone can be abused Anyone can be an abuser It is always the abusers responsibility Most abusers are known to the victim

Clear Disclosure Procedure Allegations must be taken seriously and suspicions must be reported Agree and promote a disclosure process and policy to follow and believe in it! –Do: affirm their decision to tell you, show you believe them, tell them you will need to report it, get medical help and protect them if needed, stay calm and listen carefully and record what is said.
