I. Reading skill -- Reading for Denotation and connotation

1.How to find out the key idea? Both denotation and connotation refer to the meanings of words. Denotation is the literal meaning of a word --- what you find in a dictionary. Connotation, on the other hand, is the implied meaning of a word --- what a word suggests to you, or what it makes you feel or think. For the word “die”, for example, the denotation is “stop living”. But in the sentence “Some die at 30 but are not buried until they’re 70”, the word “die” connotes “Stop living spiritually” or “stop growing intellectually”.

2.Practice Find out the denotations and connotations in these sentences from section B. The mechanic couldn’t resist a parting joke. Denotation: fight against. Connotation: could not help but make. It’s implied that the mechanic was fond of making jokes and that the mechanic and the “I” enjoyed a good relationship.

Our engine roared to life, the powerful jet turbines making noise to waken the dead. Denotation: give a continuing sound Connotation: started to work suddenly and with full energy. The engine is compared to a person who is brought suddenly to an active state from an inactive one. I expected the ride of my life, and with good reason. Denotation: a trip on horseback, in a vehicle, or on any other thing that carries Connotation: a pleasant, longed-for journey. IV. Important Words resist 抵 [ 反, 对 ] 抗 ; 阻, 耐 ( 得住 ); 阻挡, 抵制, 抗拒, 违背 ; [ 常用于否定 句 ] 忍住 resist aggression 抵抗侵略 resist heat 耐热 resist temptation 不受引诱 e.g. I was unable to resist laughing. 我忍不住笑了。 [ 扩展 ] resistance n. (to) 抵抗，抵抗力，阻力，电阻 resistant adj. (to) 抵抗的，有抵抗力的

extension n. 1. 延长，伸展 2. 电话分机 the extension of the field 天地的扩展 e.g. What is the extension number of your phone? [ 扩展 ] extend v. 指范围的扩大，如扩大领界，延伸铁路等 extended adj. 延长的，持久的 extensive adj. 广大的，广阔的 extensive reading/intensive reading e.g. Although his knowledge of the subject was extensive, the speaker’s remark seemed boringly extended. 虽然演讲者对 这个课题的知识广博，可他的演讲似乎冗长得令人生厌。 extent n. 限度，程度，如 to some extent = in/to some degree 在 某种程度上， to a certain/great extent 在一定（很大）程度上， to such an extent that … 竟然到 … 的地步（以至 ….. ）。

withstand n. oppose with force or resolution; be successful in resisting 抵抗，经受住 e.g. The shoes made by the old craftsman will withstand hard wear. 老工匠做的鞋很耐 穿。

辨析 withstand, stand, bear, endure, tolerate Withstand 经受外界的不愉快的条件 stand, bear, endure, tolerate 都有 “ 忍受，忍耐 ” 之意，通常和情 态动词 can 一起用在疑问句和否定句中来表达一种强烈的不喜欢， 不能忍受之情。但 endure 一般用在表示特别严肃的语境 I can’t bear/stand black coffee. 我受不了黑咖啡的味道。 I can’t endure talking to people who are racists. 我无法忍受与种族主义者交谈。 bear, endure 和 stand 还用来表示肉体上的折磨。 Endure 暗指持续很长时间的痛苦 He bore/stand the pain as long as he could. 他尽可能的忍受着痛苦。 She has endured great pain for a number of years. 他忍受着痛苦已经好多年了。 tolerate 指忍受人或行为而不是指痛苦 We won’t tolerate such behavior. 我们无法忍受这种行为。

pop out （使）突然出来，出来一会 e.g. I had just popped out for a breath of fresh air, and just missed your telephone call.

get going ( 使 ) 开始运行 e.g. Let’s get going or we’ll be late. e.g. Getting a business going in these hard times is almost impossible. Back
