THE ETHNIC THEORY OF PLANE CRASHES LEXI SCHETTINO, KYLE CORBLISS, ORNIT KATZIN, RYAN PERCY, BRAD LAUBE

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE MAIN REASONS OF PLANE CRASHES? “HUMAN FACTORS” UNPLANNED EVENTS COMMUNICATION SUCCESS

HUMAN FACTORS GROUNDED- THIS IS WHEN A PILOT HAS TO HAVE 30 HOURS OF REST WITH 10 HOURS NOT IN THE AIRPLANE. FUEL  PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL GAGE/TANK THAT CAUSES THE FUEL TO NOT FILL PROPERLY, INCORRECT FUEL TYPE. WEIGHT  TO MANY BAGS ON THE PLANE WHICH WEIGH IT DOWN, THAT CAUSES IT TO SLOW DOWN AND DESCEND KNOWLEDGE  THE PILOT HAS TO KNOW WHAT HE AND THE CREW IS DOING AT ALL TIMES. IF THEY DON’T THIS COULD CAUSE PROBLEMS WITH THE RUNNING OF THE PLANE.

COLGAN AIR FLIGHT 3407 Pilot broke FAA travel rules and failed his training multiple times, on top of being fatigued.

U.S AIRWAYS FLIGHT 1549 Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger III and First Officer Jeff Skiles. They brought the Airbus A319 to a safe landing on the Hudson River after the jet lost both engines from goose strikes just after taking off from LaGuardia on Jan. 15, 2009.

UNPLANNED EVENTS WEATHER TURBULENCE AUTO PILOT

WEATHER CAUSES 70% OF FLIGHT DELAYS CAUSES 23% OF AVIATION CRASHES FOG CAUSES PILOTS TO LOSE SIGHT (EX. 192 CONVERSATION) RAIN/THUNDERSTORMS (EX. 221 CONVERSATION)

TURBULENCE/AUTO PILOT RARE, BUT POSSIBLE BRITISH OVERSEAS AIRWAYS BOEING 707 APPROACHED A MOUNTAIN, EXPERIENCED UNEXPECTEDLY POWERFUL WINDS (140 MPH) THAT TORE THE TAIL FIN APART AND DOWNED THE PLANE. MALFUNCTIONING (186) NOT ALWAYS THERE (187)

COMMUNICATION RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PILOTS IF YOU HAVE 2 PILOTS THAT HAVE REALLY NEVER WORKED TOGETHER THEY COULD FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE WITH ONE ANOTHER AND CAN CAUSE MANY ERRORS WITH THE PLANE.

COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE AMBIGUITY VS. UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE AMBIGUITY  VAGUE, NOT SPECIFIC/ UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE  SPECIFIC, STATING THAT THEY HAVE A PROBLEM TALK ABOUT THE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES THAT SHOW AMBIGUITY AND UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE MITIGATED SPEECH TALK ABOUT DIFFERENT CULTURES AND HOW IDEAS/EMERGENCIES ARE EXPRESSED.

COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE “MITIGATED SPEECH” EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: NEW YORK AIR CONTROLLERS ARE FAMOUS FOR BEING RUDE, AGGRESSIVE, AND BULLYING. THEY ARE ALSO VERY GOOD THEY HANDLE EMERGENCY THE WAY THEY NEED TO BE NEEDED. “IF YOUR LUGGAGE IS NOT FOUND ON THE CONVEYOR BELT, MOVE TO THE SIDE NOW’ NON-EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: ON THE OTHER HAND YOU HAVE ASIAN AIR CONTROLLER WHO ARE NOT AS RUDE OR AGGRESSIVE. THEY DON’T HANDLE AN EMERGENCY THE WAY THEY SHOULD BE HANDLED. CANT EXPRESS THERE OPINION TO THERE ALDERS. “WE ARE RUNNING LOW ON FUEL.” MITIGATED SPEECH  WHEN YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY BUT YOU DON’T EMPHASIZE IT. EX: LACK OF FUEL OVER WE HAVE AN EMERGENCY

SUCCESS THE KEY FACTORS IN ACHIEVING THE FLIGHT ARE THE LITTLE THINGS LIKE EXPLAINED EARLIER, YOU NEED COMMUNICATION AND QUICK REACTIONS AND YOU NEED TO TRUST YOUR CREW. THE WHOLE IDEA OF THIS CHAPTER IN THIS BOOK IS TO SHOW THAT NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE OR HOW SMART YOU ARE, WE ALL NEED HELP WITH THINGS WE CANT GO THROUGH LIFE ALL BY OUR SELVES WITHOUT SOMEONE BY OUR SIDE TO HELP US. SO THE FIRST STEP OF SUCCEEDING ON YOUR OWN IS TO ASK FOR HELP
