1 Parts of an Airplane 1

2 Parts of an Airplane 1

3 Parts of an Airplane We are going to speak about basic parts of fixed wing aircraft like jets and airplanes. The wings on the fuselage create lift. The pilot sits in the cockpit towards the nose. Important stabilizers on the tail keep an aircraft steady. Below the fuselage is the landing gear. This part usually has wheels so the pilot can drive the aircraft along the ground. An aircraft needs strong tires to support its weight.

4 Parts of an Airplane Most fixed wing aircraft get their power from turbine engines. Small planes requiring moderate speed have turboprops. Bigger, faster jets, on the other hand, usually need more powerful gas turbines.

5 Parts of an Airplane Mark the following statements as true or false
A plane’s wings attach to the fuselage 2. The nose has stabilizers to keep an aircraft steady 3. The turboprops are less appropriate for large, fast jets

6 Parts of an Airplane Match the words with the definition
Tail fuselage Tire turboprops Nose landing gear The central part of an aircraft body An engine that uses a propeller for thrust The front part of an aircraft The rear part of an aircraft The part around the wheel A structure supporting aircraft while not in fight

7 Parts of an Airplane 1 Listen conversation between a pilot and a co-pilot. Choose the correct answer. 1. What is the purpose of the conversation? To explain an accident on the runway To discuss damage to an aircraft To give instructions for repairing a wheel To reprimand the crew for a poor landing 2. What will the pilot likely do next? Get ready for takeoff Examine the wheels Practice landing Order new tires

8 Parts of an Airplane 1 Listen again and complete the conversation.
Pilot: Jamie, are we ready for _______ _______? Co-pilot: Almost, Glen. But I’m concerned about _____ ______ ______ ______. Pilot: Really? What’s ______ ______ ? Co-pilot: It looks a little crooked. I think we damaged it ______ ______ ______ yesterday. Pilot: Oh, I remember. That was ______ _____ . Co-pilot: I don’t think our tires were _____ _____ to handle that. Pilot: Hmm. We’d better take a look at it before we get started.

9 Parts of an Airplane Listen again and complete the conversation.

10 Parts of an Airplane 1 With a partner, act out the roles below
Then switch roles. Pilot: Jamie, are we ready for take off? Co-pilot: Almost, Glen. But I’m concerned about one of the wheels. Pilot: Really? What’s the problem? Co-pilot: It looks a little crooked. I think we damaged it when we landed yesterday. Pilot: Oh, I remember. That was poor rocky. Co-pilot: I don’t think our tires were strong after to handle that. Pilot: Hmm. We’d better take a look at it before we get started.
