The last leg of the trip: Airport to Home

Every day between 2,000 and 3,000 aircraft fly between the U.S., Canada and Europe.* *Source: National Air Traffic Services (NATS)

#PlanAhead But we’re thinking about one flight– the one you may be taking next– even if it’s a flight from one coast to another. After a long flight crossing time zones, perhaps following an already full day of work, how will you travel safely once you land? We want you to think about the final leg of your journey– from the airport to home.

Most people who experience a fall-asleep crash either… Have had too little sleep in the 24 hours before the crash; or Regularly get too little sleep and are operating on a sleep deficit* *Source: National Sleep Foundation

Are you at risk? Are you sleep deprived or feeling fatigued? -6 hours of sleep or less triples your crash risk* Will you be driving in the mid-afternoon, at night or when you would normally be asleep? Have you taken sedating medications (such as antidepressants, antihistamines, sleep aids)? Continued on next slide *Source: National Sleep Foundation

Are you at risk? Have you consumed even a small amount of alcohol? – alcohol worsens the effects of fatigue Are you working a schedule of more than 60 hours a week? − increases crash risk by 40%* Will you be driving alone? Will you be driving on long, dark, rural or boring roads? Have you crossed several time zones? *Source: National Sleep Foundation

Guidance for a safe ride home You have flown for 8 hours or more You are experiencing the effects of jet lag as a result of crossing several time zones General Guidance: You should not drive yourself home from the airport unless you can complete the road journey within 16 hours of the time you got up. This is particularly important when: +

Guidance for a safe ride home Arrange for someone else to drive you or take a taxi or public transport; or Put off your drive home until you have had a night's rest General guidance: If you cannot reach your destination within 16 hours of the time you got up: OR

One more important thing… And because crashes are never planned, be sure to wear your seat belt on every trip, in every seat, every time, no matter who is doing the driving. And… Insist your driver buckle up as well! You want him/her conscious and in place in the event of a crash. ++ =
