Scientific Method

10/30/2015Template copyright Scientific method is a series of steps that scientists use to answer questions and solve problems. The goal of the scientific method is to come up with reliable answers and solutions.

10/30/2015Template copyright Even before starting the investigation, a scientist will make observations. Observation is any use of senses to gather information. Observations are made throughout the scientific investigation. There are two types of observations: Qualitative and Quantitative.

10/30/2015Template copyright Qualitative observations are our perceptions of objects or natural events using our senses.  Example: Pink is a better color than green. Quantitative observations may also include approximations and comparisons.  Examples: The tree is taller than that one.  Example: The tree is 15ft tall.

10/30/2015Template copyright Page 14 Confection Connection 1. Sense of Touch 2. Sense of Hearing 3. Sense of Smell 4. Sense of Sight 5. Sense of Taste 6. Was this activity a Qualitative or Quantitative Observation?

10/30/2015Template copyright Continue Page 7 Qualitative or Quantitative? 1. It is light blue in color. 2. The temperature is 87 degrees Celsius. 3. It is 6 cm long and 5 cm wide. 4. The girl is taller than the boy.

10/30/2015Template copyright Scientific Method Steps: 1. Ask a Question The question is stated in a clear and concise manner.

10/30/2015Template copyright Form a Hypothesis A hypothesis = an educated guess to the question This answer must be testable but it may not be the correct answer after being tested.

10/30/2015Template copyright Test the Hypothesis Once a hypothesis is established it must be tested. The hypothesis is tested by gathering data that can determine whether the hypothesis is supported or not. Procedures are step-by- step directions during the experiment

10/30/2015Template copyright Analyze the Results Graph, tables and charts used to organize the data.

10/30/2015Template copyright Draw Conclusion The conclusion is drawn by looking at the results and comparing them with the question. It must include whether or not the hypothesis was supported based on the results.

10/30/2015Template copyright Communicate Results Share what has been learned with others.
