Bellringer Imagine that you are an Earth scientist and can travel wherever you want to on Earth. Describe Earth’s aspects or features that you would like to study. Explain where you would go and what you would do.

Draw a scientist at work.

Scientific Method

Scientific Method The scientific method is a process that scientists use to answer questions or solve problems

Steps in the Scientific Method
Observation/Ask a question Gather information Hypothesis Experiment Analyze Data Conclusion Share results

Observations Gathered through your senses
A scientist notices something in their natural world

Hypothesis A hypothesis is a suggested solution to the problem, educated guess. Must be testable Sometimes written as If…Then… statements Predicts an outcome

A procedure to test the hypothesis.
Experiment A procedure to test the hypothesis.

Data Data are pieces of information collected during the experiment
Should be qualitative or quantitative.

Data Must be organized Data is organized into charts, tables, or graphs

Conclusion Conclusion summarizes the experiment and results

Share Resluts Share results by posting them on the internet, writing journal, or give a talk.

Bellringer 8-12 1. What step comes after asking a question in the scientific method? 2. What is a conclusion? 3. What is a hypothesis? 4. What is the last step of the scientific method?

Review In your groups, see if you can come up with a sentence to help you remember the steps to the scientific method ARHEAC

Solving a Problem 1)Identify a Problem/ask a question
2) Gather information about the problem 3) Form a Hypothesis about the problem (if…then…) 4) Design an Experiment to test the hypothesis 5) Analyze Data 6) Form a Conclusion 7) Share Results to public

Ask a Question Make an observation by using you 5 senses to help you ask a question

Research Gather information about your question

Hypothesis Make an educated guess about what you think will happen in the experiment

Experiment Follow a procedure and do your experiment

Analyze Data Look closely at the information gather during the experiment to understand it.

Conclusion Write a paragraph that tells what happened in the experiment and the results. Then SHARE it.
