When he was a teenager James helped farming until age 16. At age 17 James Cook joined the Merchant Navy. After 10 years in the Merchant navy he joined the Royal Navy.

First Voyage Captain James Cook’s first voyage began in August, 1768 and he returned in July 1771. The main purpose of his first voyage was to learn more about the planet Venus when it passed between the Earth and the Sun. Captain Cook sailed to New Zealand. Cook was the first British man to step foot on New Zealand. He also made it to Australia.

Second Voyage Captain James Cook’s second voyage was from 1771-1776. James Cook sailed to Antarctica and explored the Easter Islands. He was the first person to cross the Arctic Circle. He explored further than any European had explored.

Third Voyage Captain James Cook’s third voyage was from 1776-1779. James was searching for a North West Passage. On his way to Alaska he discovered some Islands on Christmas Day. He named them Christmas Islands. He then sailed South to the Sandwich Islands. We now know these Islands as Hawaii. When Cook left Hawaii there was a storm that broke his mast so Cook had to return to Hawaii. When he got there he got in a fight with the Hawaiian King. In the fight Cook was killed.
