They were also seafaring explorers who sailed beyond their homelands not only to raid, but also to build settlements in other parts of the world. Swedish Vikings went to Eastern Europe, while the Norwegians sailed to Greenland and North America. They visited these lands in early times in period of 800-1000. Much of the land had not been visited by Europeans yet. Polo continued travelling throughout the Far East in 1271-75. David was welcomed as a great explorer in Great Britain upon his return in 1856 from his expedition in Africa, and his book “Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa (1857)” made him famous. In 1870 the explorer began a journey into the region lying west of the lake Tanganyika, becoming the first European to travel to the Lualaba river in Africa. He died in Chitambo (in modern Zambia), probably on April 30, 1873; he was found dead on May, 1. His followers buried his heart at the foot of the tree beneath which David died. Emperor Charles V of Spain gave him five ships and two hundred and sixty-five Spanish sailors. On the journey, Magellan discovered the Pacific Ocean.
