John died in Paris, France on July 18th, 1792.

4. FUN FACTS
John Paul Jones’ career at sea started when he was only thirteen, and by the time he was twenty one, he captained a ship that sailed between the West Indies and British Ports.
Jones became the apprentice of a merchant and began sailing for the next fourteen years on merchant ships.
On one of his voyages in 1769, he had the ship’s carpenter whipped and not long afterwards, the man died (mad world). Jones was charged with murder, but was later freed.
He was born as just “John Paul” and later added the ”Jones”

5. Why Is He a Founding Father?
John Paul Jones began the naval tradition in America, what with him being a famed naval officer. He joined the Continental navy at the time of the American Revolution.

6. Sailing
John Paul Jones and a crew of 140 boarded the USS Ranger to set sail from Portsmouth, New Hampshire and head to the naval port at Brest, France. They stopped here before heading towards the Irish Sea to raid British warships. This was the first of these kinds of missions during the Revolutionary War. (1777)
