Food and Drug Administration Sir Ian Thomas Pierz III

The FDA Harvey Washington Wiley First Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration Established in 1906 with the Pure Food and Drugs Act The FDA was formerly the Bureau of Chemistry in the U.S. Department of Agriculture The Bureau of Chemistry was tasked to protect against “Misbranded and adulterated foods and drugs in interstate commerce” which the Pure Food and Drug Act prohibited.

The U.S. Health and Human Services In charge of the renamed Food and Drug Administration

The Mission

From 1906 till Now The purpose of the FDA has always been, since its beginning, the protection of the American people from unclean food The FDA is underfunded and undermanned, the book says that it would take 1,900 years to check every food plant coming into the U.S. from foreign countries

FDA has Jurisdiction Over Electronic products that give off radiation Cosmetics Feed, Drugs, and Devices used in pets, farm animals, and other animals Tobacco products Foods, except for meat and poultry Food Additives Infant Formulas Dietary Supplements Human Drugs Vaccines, Blood products, and other biologics Medical Equipment

Recent Actions

Cigarettes The FDA is purposing a law that would require tobacco products to have nine new text warnings about the supposed harmful side effects Warnings such as “SMOKING CAN KILL YOU” would appear on the containers The FDA wants this to be accomplished by June 22, 2011

The FDA is necessary and not just Bureaucratic red tape. Before the 1906 Pure Food and Drug act people were putting arsenic and other poisonous preservatives in there products. Not to mention road kill in hot dogs. Without the FDA applying pressure to Food and Drug companies to make a safe product where would we be now? I suppose eating Hebrew National because they respond to a higher authority
