Dewey Decimal System What’s up with that? I can use call numbers to find books. I can use call numbers to find subjects I need to research.

Melvil Dewey In 1876 he decided to put all the books in the library on the shelf in categories rather than by shape, color, or size.

In the nonfiction section, each book has a call number. It is found on the spine of the book. A call number is a group of numbers and/or letters that tell you where to find a book.

The library is organized by the Dewey Decimal system and by the author’s last name. This information is on the call number. Where do I find the call number?

I find the call number on the spine.

Each nonfiction book has a category, that is where the number comes from. A category is ?

In the library, Dewey decided on 10 categories. 000 – 099 Generalities 100 – 199 Philosophy 200 – 299 Religion 300 – 399 Social Sciences 400 – 499 Languages 500 – 599 Pure Sciences 600 – 699 Technology 700 – 799 Arts and Recreation 800 – 899 Literature 900 – 999 Geography and History

You are going to find out more about 1 category. Each category is assigned a set of 100. For example: Social Sciences are 300 – 399. Within that, it is broken down more, so if you wanted a book about the US government, you would start at the 300s and then go to the 330s because that is government, and then 338 is US government. These smaller designations were decided by Dewey.

We will start making the posters today and finish it next week. As you are working, I will be looking for quiet tables that are on task and will ask you to check out by table. Please pay attention to when your table is called because we have limited time (only 40 minutes) and if you do not listen when it is your turn, you will lose your turn.

Today you will choose 2 people to work with. Once you have a group: Come to the librarian, I will assign you a category. Then go look at that category of books. What are they about? How could you show it on a poster? Pick a few books to help you with examples and drawings You will make a poster about your category.

Your poster should include: The category (the numbers and the subject) For example: Pure Sciences – 500 – 599 (2 points) 8 – 10 pictures, sentences, or other examples of the category. (Remember: you are trying to teach others about your category, make it easy to read and understand) (10 points) On the back: your heading with all your names, room number, and the Date)
