2. Scope This Power Point presentation was designed to assist second through fifth grade students in locating fiction and non-fiction books independently. Students will have a better understanding of the numbers listed on every book in the media center and their relevance to subject matter.

3. Why Do the Dewey… To organize all the books found in the media center. To assist students in finding books easily. To categorize books on the same subject together and provide a special place on the shelves.

4. Who created Dewey? Melville Dewey developed the system in 1876. Melville could not find books easily on library shelves which made him very upset.

5. If It Weren’t For Dewey… Teachers and students would never be able to find a book.

6. What are the numbers? Books on the same subject have the same Dewey number. Books are organized in order by 000-999.

7. Ten Main Classes of Dewey 000-099– General Works 100-199– Philosophy & Psychology 200-299 – Religion 300-399– Social Sciences 400-499– Language

8. Classes of Dewey 500-599–Science 600-699–Technology 700-799–Arts & Recreation 800-899–Literature 900-999–History & Geography

9. 000’s Generalities- This group consists of periodicals, and reference items that may be useful to people. Sometimes they are not able to be checked out for circulation.

10. 100’s Philosophy and Psychology- Books in this category help us to deal with different emotions we may be experiencing and howto handle various situations that may be highly emotional.

11. 200’s Religion- This discipline contains information related to various religions and how those religions translate into the lifestyle and culture of people.

12. 300’s Social Sciences- This sections deals with how people live, work and socialize with one another.
