1 The Dewey Decimal System
or How to find books in our library using MATH!!!!

2 HOW do I ever find what I need?
With over 17,816 items in the library . . . HOW do I ever find what I need?

3 NUMBERS!!! Thank you, Melvil Dewey!

4 To the Left of the Decimal . . .
General Works Natural Science Philosophy & Psychology Applied Science (Technology) Religion Fine Arts Social Sciences Literature Languages Geography & History

5 Generalities Books on many different types of subjects (sometimes not yet invented or imagined in Dewey’s lifetime).

6 100-199 Philosophy & Psychology
Books that tell us how we think, feel, and act.

7 Religion Books that tell us about different religions or mythologies to help us figure out our purpose.

8 Social Sciences Books that tell us about how people live together. Fairy tales/folktales are here because they’re written to teach lessons.

9 Languages Books that tell us how to communicate with others: foreign languages, how to write, how to use proper grammar.

10 Books that are about things from nature.
Science Books that are about things from nature.

11 Applied Science Books that are about how we apply science, medicine, and technology to our lives.

12 700-799 Fine Arts & Recreation
Books that are about the things we do for fun (arts, sports, and games).

13 Literature Books that explore what makes us who we are: stories, plays, and poetry. Fiction books are supposed to be here, but there are too many!

14 Geography & History Books that tell us about the events of the past and countries of the world.

15 To the RIGHT of the Decimal ...
You may find up to three numbers. What is the name of each place value?

16 How do I find numbers on the shelf?
You have to remember PLACE VALUE!!!

17 Numbers increase in value as you move from left to right.
Just like a number line . . . Numbers increase in value as you move from left to right. The first book on the shelf will have a lower number than the last book on the shelf.

18 Imagine these are books on a shelf.
678.45 LON 679.2 MAR 678.3 SMI 678.32 CAR 680.9 MCD 680.99 MOR 683.74 LOD

19 Some books may have the same decimal number.
THEN you have to know the first three letters of the author’s last name. This doesn’t happen very often.
