Convection and the Mantle Mrs. Wach Sixth Grade (Chapter 1.3)

Heat is transferred in one of three ways. 1. RADIATION The transfer of energy/heat that is carried in rays, like light. 2. CONVECTION The transfer of energy/heat by the movement of a fluid. 3. CONDUCTION The transfer of energy/heat between materials that are touching. How Is Heat Transferred?

What Does It Look Like?

Convection Currents in Soup GRAVITY: Cooler soup become more dense. Gravity pulls soup back down to bottom of pot where it is reheated. TOP: Warm, less dense soup moves upward. It become cooler. MIDDLE: As soup expands, its density decreases. BOTTOM: The soup at the bottom gets hot and expands.

Convection Current CONVECTION CURRENT Heating and cooling of a fluid, changes in the fluid’s density, and the force of gravity combine to set convection currents in motion.

Inside Earth, heat from the core and the mantle act like the stove that heats the pot of soup. Heat from the core and mantle itself causes convection currents in the mantle. Convection in Earth’s Mantle
