National No Smoking day Wednesday 12 th March

National No Smoking Day National No Smoking Day takes place on March 12 th. The day is aimed at helping smokers to give up smoking and lead a healthier lifestyle.

National No Smoking Day Over 2 million people are expected to give up this year.

National No Smoking Day Firstly, lets look at the facts about smoking….

In 1974, nearly half the population in the UK smoked.

Today, just one quarter of the UK smoke.

The majority of smokers are aged years old

20% of women and 28% of men are ex-smokers.

Every year 114,000 people die in the UK due to smoking.

Smoking kills 6 times more people than road traffic accidents.

Smoking causes 30% of all cancer deaths.

Smoking causes premature ageing of the skin.

Everyday in Great Britain around 450 kids start smoking.

The average smoker spends £1638 a year on cigarettes.

National No Smoking Day started on 14 th March 1984.

The campaign is run by a charity. It is funded by a joint governmental and voluntary groups interested in health issues.

In 2006 – 1.5million people stopped smoking due to this campaign.

What does this day do?

Helps people to take action to stop smoking. Appeals to ALL smokers – whatever their age. Explains the help that smokers can get when they want to give up. Captures media attention to promote the event.

What does it not do? Try to force smokers to stop. It’s only interested in people who REALLY want to do something about their smoking.

This year’s message on National No Smoking Day is: To help smokers identify a more manageable target, try to stop smoking for a week. Bring people together to join in a national event to quit smoking
