2 SMOKING FACTS Each day in the U.S., approximately 3,900 kids aged 12-17 try their first cigarette. (1,423,500/year) If current trends continue, 6.4 MILLION of today’s kids will end up dying from a smoking related disease.

3 WHY IS THIS A PROBLEM? …why can’t they just quit? –several studies have found nicotine to be similar to heroin, cocaine & alcohol in terms of its addictive quality (VERY high) Addiction to nicotine –55% of teen smokers have UNSUCCESSFULLY tried to quit during the last year.

4 OKAY. So it’s “addictive” So what?

14 EFFECTS OF SMOKING Smoking related diseases eventually lead to DEATH…. it is estimated that 400,000 tobacco related deaths occur each year in the USA. (4.2 million worldwide) smoking is the #1 most preventable cause of death in the world.

15 EFFECTS OF SMOKING 2. smoking related diseases continued…. The World Health Organization reports that TOBACCO KILLS more people each year than AIDS, illegal & legal drugs, roadway accidents, murder & suicide ….COMBINED! & even those who don’t smoke can die!!!

16 SECOND HAND SMOKE a.k.a. “sidestream” smoke - 6 million youth exposed daily - 10 million 12-18 year olds live with at least one smoker. -can cause cancer, asthma & other respiratory diseases - laws now in effect to limit the risks for others … restaurants, bars, etc.
