Presentation transcript:

 Born on January 19, 1839 in Provence in the South of France.  His father was the co-founder in a banking firm and his mother a stay-at-home mom; Paul also had two younger sisters, Marie and Rose  He attended formal schooling, including law school. However, during his entire time in law school, he always received drawing and art lessons.  Cezanne moved to Paris in 1861 which cause huge problems with his dad. Eventually Cezanne’s dad came around.

 In Paris, Cezanne met and studied under Camille Pissarro. They traveled the French countryside and painted a lot of landscapes.  Cézanne was interested in the simplification of naturally occurring forms to their geometric essentials: he wanted to "treat nature by the cylinder, the sphere, the cone" (a tree trunk may be conceived of as a cylinder, an apple or orange a sphere, for example).

 Cézanne's paintings were shown in the first exhibition of the Salon Des Refuses in 1863.

 He concentrated on a few subjects and was equally proficient in each of these genres: still lifes, portraits, landscapes and studies of bathers.

One day, Cézanne was caught in a storm while working in the field. Only after working for two hours under a downpour did he decide to go home; but on the way he collapsed. He was taken home by a passing driver. He died a few days later, on October 22, 1906 of pneumonia.
