3 What is impressionism?  Impressionism is small strokes or dots  It is unmixed primary colors  It is often a painting of nature, or something true or real  They make shadows, to make everything look real, and not just look like an everyday painting

4 Who started this style of painting? Your answer is Claude Monet. He started painting in the 1870’s, when Monet was in his 30’s. Although he started it, he wasn’t the only impressionist. Some others included Camille Pissarro, Berthe Morisot, and Alfred Sisley.

5 His first 24 years 1840- Claude Oscar Monet was born, in Paris, on November 14th. 1857- The death occurs of Louise Monet, his mother 1864- He meets Gaudibert. 6 His next three years 1867- Jean Monet is born today (Claude’s first son) 1868- He tries to commit suicide 1870- Monet marries Camille They take refuge when the war begins, out in London

7 Five years later 1874- He goes to a studio in Nadar and exhibits “impressionism” while he shows his painting “sunrise” 1878- Michel Monet is born, Claude’s second son 1879- His wife, Camille dies

8 Nine more years pass 1881- Pack up! The Monet family is moving to Poissy 1892- In July, he marries Alice 1900- He take strips to London, and paints the Japanese bridge, and views of the Thames. He becomes famous

9 Seven years go by 1907- He discovers problems with his eyesight 1911- Alice dies 1914- His eldest son, Jean dies 1907- He discovers problems with his eyesight 1911- Alice dies 1914- His eldest son, Jean dies

10 The last ten years of Monet’s life 1916- He decides to build a 23m x 12m studio at Giverny 1923- He is nearly blind. When he gets his operation, his eyesight improves 1926- He is still painting, but Monet suffers from lung cancer. Claude Monet died on December 5th
