Meet the Creative Ninjas Leonardo da Vinci Michaelangelo Donatello Raphael

What is Creativity? Creativity is a mental process involving generation, or of discovering new associations between existing ideas or concepts. An alternative, more everyday concept of creativity is that it is simply the act of making something new.

Creative Introductions Find someone who has the same card as you. Get to know them. You will then be asked to introduce your partner to the rest of the group in a creative and/or numerical way including: Their name, Area of work/interest, Reasons to be here/expectations, A number or drawing that might represent an aspect of their work or life!!

Aims and objectives of the session Outline and discuss strategies for effective teaching and learning of numeracy Identify activities that engage students in learning numeracy Explore “Thinking Through Mathematics” approaches and activities Enrich own mathematical thinking Have a creative time!!

And the six faithful serving men “I keep six faithful serving men Who teach me well and true. Their names are What and Where and When And How and Why and Who.”

Number Energiser 1 N:\M4L\energisers.notebook

What are my perceptions, views and teaching practices? Before discussing how to become better at teaching and supporting learning of numeracy we need to explore and reflect on our own beliefs and assumptions about the teaching and learning of mathematics/numeracy.

In groups of three or four, discuss the statements and group them into categories:   Agree   Disagree   Cannot decide   Or modify if you wish Group Activity Sorting belief statements

  Multiple of 3Right hand   Multiple of 4Left hand   Multiple of 3 and 4Both hands   Multiple of neitherNo hands! Quick Energiser

 Result of years of research  See your handout for 8 principles of effective learning and teaching (of maths)  In your group discuss and decide which ones you use/would use in your teaching or support sessions. Principles of Effective Teaching

Group Creativity Activity  In your group create a poster!!  Show all you know about one of the following topics: –Fractions –Time –Decimals –Rectangles –Probability You might like to have a look round the room for ideas!

Must be lunch time!! YouTube - Amazing Perth Christmas Lights

Make a Hexagon!!  In your group and using the triangles make a large hexagon

Promoting and Managing Discussion  Meet Professor Atnas  Story about silence  Group activity:  In pairs or groups discuss the mathematical statements and decide if they are always, sometimes or never true!

Why is discussion so rare in Mathematics/numeracy?  Time pressure  Control  Views of learners  Views of mathematics  Views of learning

The Great Race  In your group solve the great race problem and report back to the group!  Describe any strategy you used to solve the problem.

Professor Atnas Handshakes It is graduation time and there are 8 Professor Atnases! ready to welcome the graduates. As they enter each professor Atnas shakes hands with each of the other professor Atnas. In your group can you work out the total number of handshakes?

Who Wants to be a Mathionniare? And who is Professor Atnas?

Creative Numeracy A must listen programme! BBC NEWS | Programmes | More Or Less | Christmas numbers quiz And a must read article about the Beauty of Maths BBC NEWS | Magazine | The beauty of maths

And very Finally Please complete the evaluation and feedback form and make a note of what you are going to do after this session. KEEP SMILING
