Algerian Day in the Life By: Mackenzie 6B

Hi! My name is Mackenzie Kennedy and I am following Amira Rakkal for a day. She is twelve years old. Amira lives in Algiers, which is the capital city of Algeria. Amira has two parents, a sister named Shada, and three brothers named Mustafa, Ahmed and Gabir. I am going to tell a little bit about Amira and her family ’ s life.

Amira wakes up to the view of the capital city, Algiers and all the noisy people and cars on the Northern coast in their row home. She shares a room with her sister, and her brothers all share a room. They put their modern Western-style clothing on and then have breakfast. The family eats eggs and tomatoes for breakfast. The parents drink strong black coffee and the kids drink apricot juice. The Rakkal kids walk to school on the dirt road in the hot sun since it is the spring. The school is about a quarter of a mile away. The Rakkal family walking to school. The city in the morning outside of the Rakkal family ’ s home.

When they arrive at school, all the Rakkal kids are in the same classroom with other kids also. Most of the children in the class are between the age of 6-15.They are mostly boys, but some of them are girls. When they are done their learning, they eat lunch in their small cafeteria which is usually rice and beans. Then they go home. A school day is only a half of day in Algeria. The Rakkal kid ’ s classroom. Outside of the Rakkal kid ’ s school.

After the Rakkal kids get home from school, Amira has to take care of her siblings because her parents are at work. Since some of the main exports in Algeria are oil and gas, Mr. and Mrs. Rakkal work on exporting these important resources. After the kids have finished their homework, all the kids in the neighborhood have a soccer game in the allyway. When the game is over, the kids do their chores. Rakkal kids playing soccer with some Americans that are visiting.

When Mr. and Mrs. Rakkal get home, they cook the dinner they bought at the local market while the kids are finishing up their chores. They usually eat cooked vegetables and lamb or chicken. Dinner is followed by tea. When everybody has finished their dinner, they take turns in the outside shower, which they share with the whole neighborhood. Mrs. Rakkal tells them a bedtime story then everybody goes to bed. The market where Mr. and Mrs. Rakkal sometimes purchase their food when coming home from work.

This day is like one of the typical Algerian family ’ s day. This is usually the routine everyday, unless it is a holiday. The Algerian kids have off from school if it is an important Religious holiday, or an important secular holiday. They do not go to school on Saturday and Sunday. It was very interesting learning about the Rakkal family and the country of Algeria. I learned what they eat, what sports they like to play, what the capital city was like, the occupation, and the school. I hope you learned more about Algeria, because I know I did. The Algerian Flag
