CAL OVERVIEW and DATA QUALITY REPORT T. Schörner-Sadenius Hamburg University ZEUS Meeting Padova, October 2004

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM2 Overview  CAL Manpower situation  CAL status: Overview and general stuff  see also contributions by Wladimir, Bill and Cathy  CAL DQM situation  CAL subcomponents status SRTD, SRTDFLT, PRES, F/R PRES, FNC, LED, LASER  see also contributions by Roberval, Sergei etc.

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM3 Calorimeter Manpower I … some changes …  Alessandro Polini and Isabell Melzer stepped down from CAL / CAL DQM coordination activities.  Big loss of knowlegde to the group  Still available for many questions! Thanks a lot!  Isabell had a baby boy (Linus) in August. Congratulation!  New CAL coordination team on duty and fighting ;-) …  Thomas Schörner-Sadenius (HH): general DQM, CAL students  Wladimir Hain (DESY): general, infrastructure  Kerstin Borras (DESY): HES, just starting on CAL  Merging of CAL and HES activities will, in the near future, again lead to a change of the group and coordination structure.

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM4 Calorimeter Manpower II In more detail Subcomponents (F/R Pres, FNC/FNT) running without dedicated manpower DQM CoordinatorThomas Schörner HH InfrastructureWladimir Hain DESY NEVIS and FE Electronics: Bill Schmidke Columbia Hardware Joker: Cathy Farrow Argonne/DESY LASER: Roberval Walsh McGill SRTD: Roberval Walsh McGill LED: Didar Dobur Freiburg B-PRES: S. Chekanov + H. Lim Argonne/DESY SRTDFLT: John Loizides (CFLT) Argonne (BCAL Bases: Ryan Hoffman Penn State Univ.)

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM5 Calorimeter Manpower III CAL DQM Experts Andree Robichaud-Veronneau McGill Ying Cui Toronto Marcus Jimenez Madrid Avraam Keramidas NIKHEF Gabriel Grigorescu NIKHEF Cathy FarrowArgonne/DESY Michele SumstineWisconsin DQM shifts after merger of CAL and HES groups to be discussed. Overall satisfactory situation; 7 people doing shifts (wouldn’t want more, or intervals between two shifts too long).

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM6 DQM Expert Activities performed by CAL students Andree Robichaud-Veronneau: Improvement of DQM check plots. Ying Cui: Halo muon events for HES (+CAL) efficiency monitoring Marcus Jimenez: Cobalt scan analysis Avraam Keramidas: Improved presentation of CAL DQM information Gabriel Grigorescu: Improved logging of CAL calibration information. Near future: Identification of important CAL+HES tasks and assignment of students to these tasks. Question: Invest in major and principal changes (like porting of software from Sun stations to Linux PCs), or work on manageability of the system (improve everyday tasks, make life simpler for shift crew etc.)? Probably the latter!

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM7 CAL Overall Status I … where are we?  Shutdown seemed successful;  F/RCAL: Wladimir exchanged many PMTs/bases and identified more small problems (connectors etc.). Focus not on exchange of front- end cards (in most cases only 1 or 2 bad channels per card).  BCAL:  Ryan Hoffman and Mikhail Korolev exchanged ~80 bases. Thanks and good-bye, Ryan!  Bill, Cathy and Wladimir did a lot of additional work (see later).  First calibrations after shutdown: ~220 bad channels  As compared to ~320 or even more before the shutdown.  But: System seems rather unstable; now already back to or so bad channels.  F/RCAL: new bad channels during switching on  BCAL: some `shaky’ places where ~30 bad channels show up and disappear … See later slides for detailed DQM overview.

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM8 CAL Overall Status II Frequent Problems  `Failure’ of OS9 hc3control (HV and LV power supplies): requires reboot of the machine; usually no interference with data taking. No known reason. Network?  BCAL module HV problems? Diagnostics seem sometimes unclear. Have to monitor and probably improve monitoring / warnings.  Annoying time pressure during CAL calibrations; unclear situation concerning when we are allowed to calibrate for how much time. Request: At least once a week 2 hours minimum; in case of problems (trimming, HV access etc.) more. Necessary especially if CAL gets even `older’ and more unstable.

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM9 CAL Overall Status III Changes to procedures  e± Injection/ramp/dump with CAL closed  gain a lot of time for calibration / preparation of the experiment. No negative effects observed so far; have to monitor.  Full calibrations now usually done without complete HV power cycle  might prolong lifetime of components. PMTs/bases don’t like switching on/off.  Attempt to use fully automated scripts for all CAL shift people in order to minimize sources of mistakes.

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM10 CAL Overall Status IV Further shutdowns, spare situation  Spare situation becoming critical for some components, especially FCAL EMC PMTs: 19 left! (see Wladimir’s list).  Wladimir is contacting company whether they can be rebuilt and at what cost.  This shutdown: exchanged 35!  Other components less critical.  Next access days:  Replace RCAL PMT  Try to improve BCAL HV connections  Replace a few front-end cards in F/RCAL.

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM11 FEC only Total June 12 July 6August 4 Shutdown BCAL increase; mainly due to UNO (bad DU offsets?). Trend: Especially FCAL and BCAL show increase of bad channel number with time. Access day July success! Tuesday October 12: 240 bad channels

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM12 Status since last ZEUS week FEC: Improvement in R/BCAL QINJ: Overall improvement PED: Unchanged UNO: R/BCAL better? BCAL increase; mainly due to UNO (bad DU offsets?). Clear QINJ improvement

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM13 Status since last ZEUS week Comparison with last CAL meeting FEC: Improvement in R/BCALQINJ: Overall improvement PED: UnchangedUNO: R/BCAL better?

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM14 Status as of last week (October 12) Summary  Clearest improvement in RCAL (UNO, FEC).  FCAL and BCAL: rather unstable situation.  Version 3774 (October 12th): 240 bad channels, 1 hole  But large fluctuations (F/BCAL), mainly due to UNO bad channels in BCAL. Is large fluctuation / increased sensitivity of CAL a sign of ageing?  Carefully watch CAL performance over coming weeks  Fluctuations?  Certain channels coming and going?  Signs of increased failure rate?

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM15 Subcomponents Status I … some news!  SRTD (Roberval Walsh): See Roberval’s report (Thanks Roberval for taking this responsibility!)  SRTDFLT (John Loizides): Situation unchanged; stable.  LED for F/RCAL (Didar Dobur):  Not in use currently. Situation rather unclear.  Readout is switched on.  Laser (Roberval Walsh):  Not really trusted for calibration/monitoring purposes.  Is currently switched off.  Recently problems with LASER test triggers  excluded from test triggers.

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM16 Subcomponents Status II … some news!  Barrel Presampler (S. Chekanov, H. Lim, S. Magill): See Sergei’s report.  F/RCAL Presampler (no dedicated manpower):  Suffering from low manpower in CAL group.  FCAL presampler cannot be readout  RCAL presampler okay, however not in SC (moved to `masked’ directory due to FCAL presampler failures).  Status: QINJ works well; shows low number of bad channels.  However, system has no dedicated man power; needs calibration etc.  FNC:  No dedicated manpower available.  Switched off.  Readout problems; a few cards etc. need replacing.

ZEUS Week Padova 10/2004TSS: CAL Overview and DQM17 Summary  Shutdown over; many activities on F/B/RCAL and components.  thanks to Wladimir, Bill, Cathy, Ryan, Roberval et al.  CAL status now better than before shutdown  But situation unstable; some problems come and go.  CAL seems to be getting older  Keep eye on failure rate.  Manpower situation satisfactory.  Enough students for the time being.  Not enough expertise to cover all eventualities (TP network, readout)?  Some subcomponents uncovered.  Spare situation getting critical.
