Leadership Theories: –Trait Theories and Measurement Movement L = one unquestionable in charge with higher traits  the use of measurement of traits  no specific characteristic emerged –Behavioral Theories and Leadership Styles Gain wealth through competition  maximize profits  leader (bureaucrat) : “don’t think just do”  efficiency, productivity, etc. –Bureaucratic Control Era of depression and nationalism  manage large systems with clear boundaries of what to do and how to do it…. –Situational Leadership 60’s & 70’s  more egalitarian view of society informed leadership  person could be a leader depending on circumstances…no specific skills –Transformational Leader 80’s non-leader leadership…many leaders  informed by motivation, morality and idealism  characteristic of the entire organization –Systemic Leadership 80’s & 90’s  management gurus, system thinking, teaming and strategic planning

Leaders in the 21 st century need to challenge old assumptions –Creating new categories of thinking –Openness to different sources and points of view –Flexibility and adaptability Primed by a sense of context  adjusting to the events of the past decade & engaging in new ideas Primed by the sense of capacity  clarifying and defining previous assumptions = construction of new mental models Primed by a sense of alignment  rely on intuition or insight from trial and error  align leadership behavior to intelligence  connecton with other leaders to achieve goals Primed by a sense of advantage  advantage of information (historic and current content)

New definition: –Mindful leaders understand and apply their own intelligence –To the understanding and the application of intelligence throughout their organization –To achieve meaningful purpose –Premises: Organization = 2 or more people gathering Human potential of any organization = greatest asset In order to achieve this asset, minds in the organization must be fully engaged Actions of a leader can influence whether an organization can be intelligence friendly Knowledge about the brain essential in all organizations
