 Article I of the Constitution establishes the legislative (law making) branch of government with the formation of a bicameral Congress. Bicameral : Two Houses

 The most important duty of the legislative branch is to make laws.  There are 100 senators in the senate.  Two from each state  There are 435 representatives in the House of Representatives.  Based on each state’s population

 Representatives are elected for two-year terms.  Must be 25 years old  A citizen for at least 7 years  Resident of the state from which they are elected. Tim Walberg (R) 7 th District Representative

 The Constitution gives Congress “all legislative powers” in the national government.  Expressed Powers :  Powers directly stated in the Constitution.  Why are Expressed Powers Important?  Article I, Section 8, Provides for several Enumerated Powers  (because they are number 1-18) 1. Coining money. 2. Maintaining a military. 3. Declaring war on other countries. 4. Regulating interstate and foreign commerce

 The Constitution also gives Congress the authority to “make all laws which shall be necessary and proper.”  This in known as the Elastic Clause.  Gives Congress an implied source of power  McCulloch v. Maryland  Implied Powers Why is this Important?

 The executive branch of the Government is responsible for enforcing the laws of the land. 1. President 2. Vice President 3. Cabinet Members  Advises the President on policy issues and help execute those policies 4. Independent Agencies  Help execute policy or provide special services
