3 What are the two types of landmarks? Natural landmarks are landmarks that have been formed by nature. Man-made landmarks have been produced, formed, or made by humans.

4 Man-Made Landmarks: Washington Monument Washington D.C. Built to remember our 1 st president, George Washington. Honors George Washington as the Father of Our Country. It is about 555 feet tall and has a pointed top.

5 Lincoln Memorial Washington D.C. Built to remember Abraham Lincoln, our 16 th president. Honors his work to end slavery. A 19 foot statue that shows President Lincoln sitting in a chair.

6 Jefferson Memorial Built to remember our 3 rd president, Thomas Jefferson. President Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence. Built the plantation, Monticello.

7 Statue of Liberty New York City The seven spikes on the crown represent the light of liberty shining on the seven seas and continents. The torch stands for lighting the way to freedom. The tablet shows the date the Declaration of Independence was signed.

8 Mount Rushmore South Dakota Honors George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Faces are about 60 feet tall. About 400 workers help build the monument.

9 Liberty Bell Pennsylvania Rang in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was signed. Rang for many years until it cracked in You can see the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia.

10 Natural Landmarks: Grand Canyon Colorado Formed 17 million years ago. Created by the Colorado river eroding the rock. The river is 277 miles long and 18 miles wide!

11 Haystack Rock Oregon The rock sits on Oregon's coast at a place called Cannon Beach. It is 235 feet tall. The rock was formed from lava about 10 to 17 million years ago.

12 Mono Lake California It is a California landmark that is 760,000 years old! The rocks in the lake are made of limestone. 100,000 people visit the lake every year.

13 Niagara Falls Canadian-American Border Was formed over the last 12,000 years by melting glaciers and water erosion. The largest crest stretches 2,600 feet. It attracts 12 million visitors every year.

14 Crater Lake Oregon Was formed by the collapse of the Mount Mazama volcanoes. The crater is 6,850 years old. It has a 100 year old tree stump floating in it called “Old Man of the Lake”.

15 Yellowstone National Park Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho The park spans 3,472 square miles over three states. It has lakes, canyons, rivers, and mountains. The park was preserved by Ulysses S. Grant in 1872.
