When Should You Make One? When writing a paper or doing a project, you may conduct research to find information, pictures, quotations, data, or even ideas to assist you. When you borrow the material, you must give credit to the originator by citing your source.

Why Should You Have One? If you “borrow” from a source without giving credit you are stealing the material. This is called plagiarism and it is against the law!

What Needs to be Cited? Direct Quotes Paraphrases/ Summaries Historical, Statistical, and Scientific Data An Author’s Ideas

What Does Not Need Citation? Common Knowledge Common Quotations Common Idiomatic Expressions and Sayings Free Clip Art

Where Do You Put It? The Works Cited should be the last page of a written project or be provided with an oral presentation.
