The First English Settlement Roanoke

Roanoke Settlement The first English colony was located in present day North Carolina. England saw that Spain was growing rich because of their colonies in the “New World” and they wanted that as well. Queen Elizabeth I chose Walter Raleigh to set up a colony in North America. The first group came to Roanoke Island in They did not stay long because they ran low on food and then returned to England.

More Information John White led another group of settlers to Roanoke Island in After a time, White sailed back to England to get more supplies. White returned three years later and all of the settlers were gone. What happened there is still a mystery. Roanoke is known as the Lost Colony. The Roanoke colony lived on Roanoke Island.

“Croatoan” When John White returned to Roanoke Island, he found that the word Croatoan, the name of a local Native American tribe, had been carved into a post.
