Teaching By Assessment JMC Initiative Dr. Ibrahim Saleh Department of Journalism & Mass communication The American University in Cairo

Teaching by Assessment Teaching by assessment is the only way to break down barriers between education and work by providing flexible and convenient learning opportunities. It enhances increasing participation amongst higher education students to promote an appreciation of academic skills and scholarship.

Objectives of TBA Develop innovative approaches to e-learning. Level increase in class participation and engagement. Prepare students for employment, professional life and continued learning and professional development. Share the experience to develop curricula that embrace an international dimension and support the growth in international recruitment and international collaboration.

Five Aspects of Learning 1. Understanding of the Topic. 2. Knowledge development of the Topic. 3. Skills building needed for the Topic. 4. Students' Relationships. 5. Students' empowerment.

JMC 400 Media Ethics & Responsibility taught by Dr. Ibrahim Saleh Can we Teach Ethics? I cannot teach you media ethics in the sense of learning or memorization but can only help in promoting moral conduct by providing the means to make ethical judgments, defend them and criticize the consequences.

Living Ethics Building character and initiating the sense of community by focusing on advancing teamwork or resolving work-place issues proactively. Emphasizing right and wrong, through applied ethics and emotional intelligence techniques so that participants feel and live it. Incorporate community-enriching principles into the personal and professional lives.

Popular Diplomacy AUC Connect Project 47 Universities in Africa, Europe, Asia, North America (US & Canada) and Latin America (Brazil). Only this semester, the students’ news pieces & policy memos are published nine times by Common Grounds News Service: Partners in Humanity. "I think it was a very useful experience and I am glad I joined" (Female, Jordanian, American University in Cairo) 100% of AUC students agreed or strongly agreed that participating in the Connect Program helped them clarify what they think and feel about issues that are important to them 100% of AUC students said that while participating in the Connect Program, they shared information about what they were learning with their peers and other people in their community. Conclusive Findings

Effect on Understanding "I realized that many Americans are not as affected by biased Western media as I had thought they were" (Female, Egyptian, American University in Cairo) 90% of AUC students agreed or strongly agreed that the Connect Program gave them a better understanding of why people in the US think the way that they do.

Effect on Knowledge "I learned a lot of things but most importantly, I started reading more about other cultures and even my own culture. I started educating myself more on different issues such as the Palestine- Israel conflict" (Female, Sudanese, American University in Cairo) Prior to the program: 21% of AUC students rated their knowledge of the history of US involvement in the Middle East as high or very high. After the program: 50% of AUC students rated their knowledge of the history of US involvement in the Middle East as high or very high

Effect on Skill Building: Communication, conflict resolution and Media Literacy Skills "Creating the video helped me learn a lot about the difficulties of creating an unbiased news feature" (Female, Egyptian, American University in Cairo) Prior to the program: 64% of AUC students said that they felt competent in intercultural conversations. After the program: 82% of AUC students said that they felt competent in intercultural conversations.

Effect on Students’ Relationships 75% of AUC students said that they built meaningful relationships through their participation in the Connect Program 75% of AUC students think that they will stay in touch with people from other universities whom they met through the Connect Program.

Effect on Student Empowerment I will try to join more cross cultural programs" (Male, Bahraini, American University in Cairo) Prior to the program: 68% of AUC students believed that partnerships between people in the US and people in the Middle East had the potential to affect change in the relationship between the US and the Arab & Muslim World After the program: 89% of AUC students believed that such partnerships had the potential to affect change in the relationship between the US and the Arab & Muslim World
