Properties of Operations in Math Lesson 2

Inverse Operations Means: “putting together” a problem and “taking it apart” using the same numbers by + and – Example: = 5 5 – 3 = 2 OR 5 – 2 = 3

Commutative Property of Addition Means: changing the order of problem doesn’t make the answer different Example: = = 11

Identity Property of Addition Means: when we add 0 with any given number, the answer will always be the given number Example: = = 15

Associative Property of Addition Means: we can “group” the numbers in any way and still get the same answer Example: (2 + 3) + 4 = (3 + 4) = (2 + 4) = 9

Property of Zero for Multiplication Means: when we multiply any number with 0, the answer will always be 0 Example: 15 x 0 = 0 (0)(125) = 0

Commutative Property of Multiplication Means: changing the order of problem doesn’t make the answer different Example: 7 · 3 · 2 = 42 2 · 7 · 3 = 42

Identity Property of Multiplication Means: when we multiply 1 with any given number, the answer will always be the given number Example: 12 (1) = 12 1 · 24 = 24
