Multiplication Properties Associative Property Commutative Property Zero Property Identity Property

Complete with the number that will make the two sides equal 8 x ___ = 8 (7 x 3 ) x 4 = 7 x ( 3 X ___) ___ x 5 = 0 6 X 5 = ___ x 6 (4 x 3) x 8 = 4 x ( ___ x 8) 0 x 9 = ____ 1 x ___ = 74 x ___ = 3 x 4

Associative Property ( Grouping) The associative property says you may group numbers ( or factors) together without changing the value of the product. (4 x 3) x 2 = 4 x (3 x 2) 12 x 2 = 4 x 6 24 = 24

Associative Property One way to remember this property is to think of the word “associate.” We associate with different friends, right? Factors in the associative property “associate” with different factors.

Numbers in the associative property “associate” with each other. (5 x 3) x 4 = 5 x (3 x 4) 15 x 4 = 5 x 12 60 = 60

The Cummutative Property The cummutative property states that factors may be multiplied in any order without changing the value of the product. 6 x 4 = 4 x 6 24 = 24

Commutative Property When you come to school every day, you travel, or “commute.” One way to think about the commutative property, is that the numbers can “move.” Even though numbers on each side of the equal sign move, the answer (or product) remains equal. 5 x 6 = 6 x 5 30 = 30

Commutative Property 10 x 2 = 2 x 10 20 = 20 12 x 3 = 3 x 12 36 = 36

Commutative or Associative? 3 x 7 = 7 x 3 (3 x 7) x 2 = 3 x ( 7 x 2) 2 x ( 4 x 3 ) = ( 2 x 4 ) x 3 1 x 3 = 3 x 1

Zero Property of Addition In multiplication, 6 x 0 = 0. Anytime you multiply a factor by zero, the answer is 0. 0 x 3 = 0 6 x 0 = 0 9 x 0 = x

Multiplication Properties Associative Property Commutative Property Zero Property

Identity Property The Identity property states that when you multiply a number and 1, the product is that number. 1 x 8 = 8 1 x 6 = 6 1 x 25 = 25
