“Worship the King” Part 3 “How to Attack Failure” Matthew 26: 31-75

Jesus makes a sobering prediction that is not believed (vv.31-35) Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: " 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'

Jesus makes a sobering prediction that is not believed (vv.31-35) But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will."

Jesus makes a sobering prediction that is not believed (vv.31-35) "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times."

Jesus makes a sobering prediction that is not believed (vv.31-35) But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the other disciples said the same.

Jesus makes a sobering prediction that is not believed (vv.31-35) Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me,

Jesus makes a sobering prediction that is not believed (vv.31-35) Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me,

Jesus makes a sobering prediction that is not believed (vv.31-35) What was about to happen was not limited to Judas and Peter – but it was something that was going to happen to all of them

Jesus makes a sobering prediction that is not believed (vv.31-35) “skandalizein”; But Jesus told them they would all “stumble” or “take offense” on account of Him.

Jesus makes a sobering prediction that is not believed (vv.31-35) 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' 32But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." - Zech. 13:7.

Jesus makes a sobering prediction that is not believed (vv.31-35) Jesus who has predicted their failure also predicts their recovery.

Jesus makes a sobering prediction that is not believed (vv.31-35) But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will."

The disciples show the first signs of weakness (vv.36-46) Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane,

The disciples show the first signs of weakness (vv.36-46)

Jesus gave two commands: Jesus asked the disciples to “keep watch”. and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."

The disciples show the first signs of weakness (vv.36-46) He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled.

The disciples show the first signs of weakness (vv.36-46) Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."

The disciples show the first signs of weakness (vv.36-46) Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

The disciples show the first signs of weakness (vv.36-46) Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter.

The disciples show the first signs of weakness (vv.36-46) Jesus told the disciples to “watch” and “pray”. "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

The disciples show the first signs of weakness (vv.36-46) He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."

The disciples show the first signs of weakness (vv.36-46) When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

The disciples show the first signs of weakness (vv.36-46) Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting?

The disciples show the first signs of weakness (vv.36-46) Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

The first two predictions become reality (vv.47-56) While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people.

The first two predictions become reality (vv.47-56) Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him.

The first two predictions become reality (vv.47-56) Jesus replied, "Friend, do what you came for." Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword,

The first two predictions become reality (vv.47-56) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

The first two predictions become reality (vv.47-56) "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.

The first two predictions become reality (vv.47-56) Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

The first two predictions become reality (vv.47-56) But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?"

The first two predictions become reality (vv.47-56) At that time Jesus said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?

The first two predictions become reality (vv.47-56) Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled."

The first two predictions become reality (vv.47-56) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Peter’s denial of Jesus Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled.

Peter’s denial of Jesus But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.

Peter’s denial of Jesus Peter denied Jesus before the powerless. Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said.

Peter’s denial of Jesus Peter denied Jesus before the powerless. But he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said.

Peter’s denial of Jesus Peter denied Jesus to cover himself. Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there,

Peter’s denial of Jesus Peter denied Jesus to cover himself. "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth." He denied it again, with an oath: "I don't know the man!"

Peter’s denial of Jesus Peter denied Jesus to protect himself. After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, "Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away."

Peter’s denial of Jesus Peter denied Jesus to protect himself. Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I don't know the man!"

Peter’s denial of Jesus Peter denied Jesus to protect himself. Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken:

Peter’s denial of Jesus Peter denied Jesus to protect himself. "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Peter’s denial of Jesus Peter denied Jesus to protect himself. “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matt: 16:16).

Your failure is not final! Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. - 2 Corinthians 7:10

Your failure is not final! “went outside and wept bitterly” “When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse…he went away and hanged himself”

Bottom Line: You can avoid failure altogether if you will learn to attack failure before it attacks you.

Bottom Line: Learn to trust what Christ knows about us not what we think about ourselves.

Lynchburg is in the top 10…

Bottom Line: Don’t give sin a pass because of circumstances. Trying to hide from our failures will only take us deeper into failure.

Bottom Line: When your reality does not meet your expectations – pray! But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."
