Resetting Your Life Overcoming the Stigma of Failure

Resetting Your Life Matthew 26:31-35 NIV 3131 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “ ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” 33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.” 3233 3434 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” 3535 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.

Resetting Your Life Matthew 26:69-75 NIV 6969 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said. 7070 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said. 7171 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 7272 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”

Resetting Your Life Matthew 26:69-75 NIV 7373 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.” 7474 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.75

Resetting Your Life John 21:15-19 NIV 1515 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” 1616 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” 1717 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Resetting Your Life John 21:15-19 NIV Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”1819

Resetting Your Life Application Points  Even the best among us are susceptible to failure, especially when we overestimate ourselves.  A real reset is always a product of a love relationship.  The reset that God gives to us frees us from our failures and our guilt and empowers us to be like Jesus.  We do not have to understand how God resets our lives, we just need to commit to Him fully.  The reset that God provides is always for a purpose that goes beyond the needs of the individual.

Resetting Your Life Application Questions  What do we learn about ourselves from Peter’s failure?  What do we learn about God’s view of our failures from Peter’s example?  What does it mean to love Jesus?  Why does God reset us?
