Career Planning

Career Interests Think of careers that would be interesting as well as rewarding. Consider careers that would match up with your natural abilities and personality. Think about what kind of lifestyle you would like to have. Think about what kind of education/training you will need to prepare for this career.

High School Diplomas Recommended—26 credits 4X4 2 years foreign language Distinguished Achievement Program—26 credits 4X4 3 years foreign language 4 advanced measures (AP among others) IB—International Baccalaureate Program Curriculum is internationally based and designed to provide a broad liberal arts experience Includes courses, testing, extended essay and outside creativity and service activities

College Credits in HS? Advanced Placement Courses In addition to fulfilling the HS diploma requirements for DAP, completing an AP class in your JR or SR year could earn you college credit if you score well enough on the AP exam. Check with the college/university of your choice to determine the score required to receive credits. Tech Prep credits are recognized by public colleges if these courses fall within you major of study. These are taken in 11 th or 12 th grade and require an 80 or above average to receive credit. Dual Credit is enrollment in a college credit class offered at the HS level. Student may be required to take a college readiness exam to enroll if TAKS scores are not high enough.

Texas GRANT Will provide up to 150 hours of college credit at a public university in Texas. Applicants must: Be a Texas resident Graduate with Recommended or DAP diploma Show Financial Need (FAFSA) Not convicted of a felony or drug related crime

Financial Aid—terms to know Grants and Scholarships are free money that you don’t have to pay back. Loans are money you must repay. All students will fill out a FAFSA during their senior year. This is a clearinghouse for any financial aid awarded. For more information visit

Did you know that… The valedictorian of any Texas public high school receives a scholarship to cover tuition costs at any Texas public college or university? Students in the top 10% of their HS graduating class are eligible for automatic admission to any Texas public university if they have completed the Recommended or DAP diploma?

Testing Lingo c PLAN—pre ACT, taken in 10th grade PSAT—preliminary SAT, taken in 10th grade for practice, can qualify student as National Merit Scholars in 11th grade ACT/SAT—college entrance exams, taken in 11th and 12th grade
