1 College Terms to Know Preparing for College and Careers You Can GO! Student Goal: Student will accurately define college terms by completing the foldable vocabulary sheet.

2 Tuition Room & Board  The cost of instruction which is charged per credit hour of classes taken by the student Credit Hours  The approximate hours spent in class.  For example: A 3 credit hour class would meet for 3 hours each week.  The cost of housing and meal Fees  College and universities charge fees for things like student activities and technology regardless of participation. Paying for College

3 FASFA  Application for Financial Aid- must be completed if the student wishes to receive any government aid like grants or loans Student Loans  May be government or private loans that are used to pay for all school related expenses. Grants  Money awarded to students that does not have to be repaid. Scholarships  A scholarship is money awarded to students based on certain criteria such as grades and financial needs. Students must apply and scholarships do not have to be repaid. Paying for College

4 PSATSATACT Preliminary SAT- a practice test for the SAT. Also used to determine student. Eligibility for national merit scholarship program. Scholastic Aptitude Test- scores are used by colleges to aid in the selection for student admission American College Test- also used by colleges to aid in the student admission selection process. Consists of 4 different tests. College Readiness Exams

5 Types of Degree AssociatesBachelorsMasterDoctorate 2years degree program consisting of 60 credit hours. 4 year degree program requiring 120 hours 2 years of schooling in addition to a bachelors degree 1-4 years of schooling in addition to a masters degree Undergraduate Program 2-4 year programs Graduate Program Any education program that take place after a bachelors degree. Post-Graduate Program Education completed after graduation from a master’s degree program

6 Private School vs. Public School Private  Receives NO public financial support in the form of tax dollars.  Usually smaller class sizes  Usually fewer degree Programs  Local Example: Franklin College Public  Receives tax dollars to run the school  Usually larger class size  Usually more degree programs.  Local Examples: Indiana University The major difference is how they are funded. This is in general not 100% of the time.

7 Commuter School  Does not have housing on campus and therefore students must commute to the campus.  Can be private or public  A college or university which caters primarily to the needs of commuting students is commonly referred to as a commuter college.  The word commuter refers to traveling to a destination.  A commuter college provides the instructors, buildings and support facilities needed to complete a course of instruction, but not necessarily the dormitories, student life centers, or sports facilities associated with traditional colleges  Example: IVY Tech

8 Basically students activities. A couple examples: Intramurals  Sports activities available to students that focus more on recreation than competition. Greek Life  Social Organization in which students must earn membership in order to be part of the organization. Not all colleges and universities offer Greek life.  Sorority= female  Fraternity= male Campus Life These are just examples. The list of student life is long….

9 Grades G.P.A.  Grade point average, usually, on a 4 points scale. It represents the average grade a student receives at the end of a class.  4=A 3=B 2=C 1=D 0=F Deans List  Awarded each semester, it recognizes achievement of a GPA 3.5 or higher on a 4 point scale. Probationary Enrollment Students who fail to make good grades or academic progress are placed on probation in which their grades are monitored. May lead to expulsion if grades do not improve.
